FRC Course
Functional Range Conditioning Course
As part of a team with Hunter Cook (Lead Instructor), I represented Functional Anatomy Seminars as an assistant instructor for Functional Range Conditioning or FRC. FRC is the gold standard in mobility training and Joint Health.
It was an honour to be a part of educating health professionals in Asia once again. We had 90+ participants sign up for the FRC Course. Our participants were from all over Asia: Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Thailand and of course Hong Kong. Check out the gallery at the bottom for some quick course pics.
The next FRC course in Asia will be in Singapore (english) and Seoul (English with Korean interpretation). I will be in Singapore as an instructor.
FRC focuses on 1-on-1, individualized. comprehensive joint training system based in scientific principals and research. Have you heard of the Functional Range Systems? If not, You can read more about the core certifications FRC and FR here.
I have been involved with the Functional Range systems for some time and have been an assistant instructor with the Functional Anatomy Seminars for 1 year.
FRC can help personal trainers, physiotherapists, Chiropractors, Osteopaths etc. learn to use training as part of their treatment protocol. Is your health professional using training as a form of treatment? They should be as its gold standard in specific programming for an individuals capacity. Do you have a fitness or health facility that would like to learn FRC? Feel free to contact me here.

Do you have shoulder pain?
Check out the videos below on my clients’ progress. Living with shoulder stiffness and pain can be difficult. You have options to help decrease your shoulder pain.
What are my options for shoulder pain?
There are both invasive and non-invasive options. My client opted for surgical intervention first. This option was chosen based on thorough research, clinical case history and patient values. He then put in the work after surgery with a team of physiotherapists, Chiropractor and trainers to get him to this point.
If you are having problems, the best thing to do is get an assessment to see what is best for your case and is in line with your values.

Sports Clinic
Learning from Sports Clinic experts
I was fortunate to visit Dr. Mike Chivers, Head Lead Instructor of Functional Anatomy Seminars for Functional Release and Functional Range Assessment. @drmchivers .
“Dr. Chivers holds an Honours Bachelor of Physical Education from Brock University. He is a graduate of the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (CMCC) where he graduated Cum Laude and with clinical honours and a Doctor of Chiropractic. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Chiropractic Sports Sciences after finishing a two year post-graduate residency program. He has been an Assistant Professor at CMCC in the departments of Clinical Education and Orthopedics. He maintains a private practice and is also a highly sought for injury and performance consulting amongst athletes at the amateur, provincial, national and professional level. He has also written numerous articles and has published papers in peer reviewed scientific journals.” (bio from https://www.functionalanatomyseminars.com/about-us/)
Dr. Mike Chivers allowed me to observe and speak to him on how he adapts the Functional Anatomy Seminars Paradigm when making clinical decisions on sports injury.
I was able to observe 6 cases in the time I was in the Sports Clinic. Here are some brief descriptions of the cases below:
Case 1- hip paib, achy but less sore, running box jumps causing pain into testicle region, cueing for cat cow was done to reduce rib flare and also practice diaphragm breathing for rib mobility.
Case 2- Ankle sprain from sports. FR done on ankle musculature
Case 3- right hip pain when walking
Case4- bilateral elbow, rotation irritation in forearms, lack of supination, elbow weighted cars and pails to supination given to promote motion
Case 5- left knee shattered, wiring 2x and pinning, 5 procedures, 6 month post total knee replacement, patient reported dry needling after 1 session brought the lowest pain levels down since knee replacement.
Case 6- Right knee pain and irritation in older female, difficulty walking, FR to knee
Special thank you Dr. Chivers and Sports Performance Centres for having me.
What is FRA or FR Assessment?
The FRA or Functional Range Assessment this involves measuring someones physical joint health. From this assessment, a clinician and coach can then prescribe a daily routine, specific Strength and Conditioning (S & C) and training. A health professional should want to gather detailed information during any assessment. This information will be used to give a measurable baseline. From there we can set your “finish line” or health goals and measure your progress.
The FRA assessment is based on an active and passive measurement of the body’s joints (ankles, knees, hips, spine, shoulders, elbows and wrists). FRA is a standardized assessment system that allows for ease of communication between clinicians, trainers and coaches.
I spent 40 hours in transit for the 3 day course. Why? To be with the best and brightest minds and manual medicine, S & C and fitness were in attendance. Internationally recognized trainers and health professionals gathered in Austin at the Onnit Academy and De Franco’s gym to learn Functional Range Assessment. The assessment course also involved us learning to program both manual therapy and joint health in a strength and conditioning and wellness program. In depth lecture and discussion of bio flow, dynamic systems theory were also done.
What is the ONNIT Academy?
The ONNIT Academy is located at Austin, Texas. Onnit is dedicated to “Total Human Optimization” through nutrition, strength and conditioning equipment and physical education. Onnit also features specific strength and conditioning training, 10th Planet jiu-jitsu and Bang Muay Thai.
I was also able to take in exercise class with the Esik a.k.a. Erik Melland, the Steel club master coach for Onnit. In class, we did mostly bodyweight exercises, and incorporated some tools such as Battle ropes, steel mace steel clubs, sandbags, Thai rope and kettle bells. This exercise worked in the core and blasts the nervous system. Was great to get a workout and learn some new movement.
